A career in social work values the need to possess the desire to correct injustices and care for the vulnerable in society. Social workers’ core competencies include committing to values of social justice, interpersonal relationships, the capacity to analyze situations from different perspectives, and respect for diversity. These core competencies thus make social workers natural leaders. My vision for leading exceptionally as a social worker is through the implementation of a transformational leadership style. This leadership style will present me with an opportunity to guide my social work agency team to achieve the organization’s objectives by motivating them to rally towards a common vision. This leadership plan will direct the team more coherently and cohesively by assessing the leadership concept’s various ethical aspects and their integration into the team’s long-term policy.
My leadership reign will begin by formulating core values and mission statements to have a similar objective. There is a need to have an exact process where leaders inspire others to share the same vision. My transformational leadership will involve motivating workers towards the organization’s goal by initiating a step-by-step implementation of a vision within the organization (Anderson, 2017). My leadership plan will provide my team with a social work ideal that will help me work towards the set goal. Inspiration acts as a great motivator in social work; thus, I will incorporate supportive communication such as affirmation words. I will also strive to inspire intellectual stimulation by seeking opinions from my team and challenging them to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills to stimulate change regarding solving societal issues. Feedback is a crucial element in implementing my vision as it will gauge my level of involvement. My leadership plan will also incorporate immediate feedback to build trust among the clients and my team.
Leadership Skills in Theoretical Framework
My theoretical social work agency incorporates the mission of caring for marginalized people in a society experiencing financial distress and with no means of sufficiently covering their basic needs. The services offered include; providing safer housing options, food, clothing, health services, and hygiene items. Our clients include; the homeless, senior citizens, veterans, people with disabilities, and the under-employed. My leadership strategy encompasses political skills essential in building connections with people to foster supportive and trusting environments. I believe that my interpersonal influence, networking ability, and ability to anticipate situations will benefit the organization in achieving its goal. My leadership plan will be crucial when building rapport with the clients to ensure a conducive working environment. Vulnerable people in society may have unique needs; thus, social workers need to provide the best services based on the issues raised.
My transformational leadership qualities include the power of listening and feedback. A good leader should listen to his/her team and clients and give feedback on the issues raised (Farahnak, Ehrhart, Torres, and Aarons, 2020). By listening to the issues raised, I will discover the challenges each person faces and find ways of helping for the greater good of reaching the set target. By engaging the clients on their issues, I can plan for the future by considering their complaints as futuristic goals. My leadership plan is based on the ability to persuade people to follow my lead. A dedicated staff supports my leadership in the social work agency. The social work team will follow my leadership when they have assurances that it is in their best interest thus will adjust the worker’s interests without compromising the company’s short and long-term objectives.
My transformational leadership qualities entail listening to my employees while being attentive to their words and viewing the situation from their perceptive. This tactic will involve negotiating an agreement that will favor both parties, thus creating a positive environment. My leadership strategy will also involve cultural competency while intervening in diverse communities. Understanding different cultures are paramount for my transformational leadership as it improves communication and thus serves clients with cultural sensitivity. My leadership style will be based on overcoming cultural obstacles by embracing new ideas in working with the population to build rapport and enable a trustworthy environment.
Evaluation of Transformational Leadership Skill Set
One advantage of implementing a transformational leadership style will keep the social work agency open and ethical in its dealings. Transformational leaders are ethics-focused, thus breed authenticity and transparency in an organization’s culture (Malik, Javed, and Hassan, 2017). Transformational leaders can assess a problem, formulate a solution and communicate the vision to team members. The social work team’s understanding of the shared vision leads to improved outcomes regarding goal achievement. There is better communication from leaders as they provide concise messages regarding an organization’s vision, thus promoting morale among the workers. Transformational leaders empower individuals, making them feel part of the organization, thus cultivating loyalty in the workplace.
However, transformational leadership has its disadvantages, where leaders are less detail-oriented and more conceptual regarding the operational planning to achieve the desired goal. The leadership strategy also requires a constant flow of feedback, which is both time-consuming and leads to disinterest where workers are not kept in the loop. Another disadvantage is that a transformational leader’s influence fades if the team is disconnected from the organization’s vision since it requires workers to be intrinsically motivated to work towards a set goal. Ultimately, transformational leadership is still the best choice leadership style for social work as it motivates workers to strive beyond the set expectations in enhancing people’s quality of life.
