Part A
The history of “Blackface” since the 1820s when it became popular following the theatrical performances by Thomas Rays has often been marred with negativity. The “Blackface” presents a worse perspective when won by a white person. Its usage has been associated with advancing racism, discrimination against the blacks, and a remembrance of the dark days of slavery. The minstrel theatre culture of using the “Blackface” characterization is depicted as a negative norm for whatever course. Despite the modern age’s progress and development – the history of slavery and dehumanization of the black people is not well received. The recent case of a white kid wearing a “Blackface” for a school project in Texas to present what he admired most in leadership chose to resemble Barack Obama. The scenario resulted in being perceived as a tool and epitome of racism. Thus, not accepted to the majority of the American populace.
Part B
In the Modern Family television show, character Gloria – played by Sofia Vergara is criticized extensively including by Latinos. She is criticized for the fact that she “embodies negative stereotypes of Latina women” (Dwyer 2017). The show includes a mention of her ethnicity and her stereotypic “Colombian” behavior which is illustrated in almost every episode. Moreover, Vergara’s accent is a point of criticism in advancing the stereotype of the Latinos in the theatre industry. The stereotype is depicted in a negative light of a person who cannot pronounce English words fluently. Furthermore, her stereotyped character is a source of humor in the show.
Part C
When it comes to the theatre of the people, protest, identity, and cross-cultural theatre – the use of characterization such as the “Blackface,” “Redface,” and “Yellowface” often attract negative effects. The criticism surrounding portraying the stereotyped characters in a bad light. For example, the “Blackface” depicts the Black folks as ignorant, stupid, illiterate, lazy, among other negative sentiments. To turnaround this perception, transforming the characters as always the losers and violated victims – it is important to illustrate their characterization in light of superiority and accomplishment. This gives room to showcase their capacity to progress and contribute positively to the world. Not only, their prosecution and indignation.
