In Western Identity from Classical Greece to the Renaissance, Ingrid Rosellini argues that “For the Greeks, self-knowledge and identity were the basics of their civilization and their sources were to be found in where one was born and into which social group,”[1] supporting Greece’s involvement in the formation and establishment of the Western Civilization. From this realization, Rosellini demonstrates her understanding of the Greek civilization and its influence on other attempts by countries around the world to accomplish their desired goals and objectives. Therefore, the Western Civilization is largely influenced by Greek culture, which played a critical role in transforming the native way of life by exposing individuals to new values that defined their identities in their surroundings.
The Ancient Greeks exposed the Western World to an enabling environment that changed their perspectives on art, math, and philosophy among other aspects of life and society. Importantly, literature and theatre in the Greek culture contributed to the formation and establishment of the modern drama witnessed today because of the progressive ideologies that provoked the thought process of individuals. Likewise, the U.S. constitution borrowed certain aspects from the Athenian approach, which helped the country develop a voting system that promoted democracy within its jurisdiction. Hence, the Western Civilization has a wide range of similarities with the Greek Culture, which have played a key role in the realization of the modern rights and freedoms.
