The Connection Between Culture and Myth | Sociology Homework Help

Myths are narratives that enable individuals understand the beliefs and practices of different cultural groups in the modern world. Although many myths are false, some contain factual information that captures the outcomes of events that took place before the age of civilization. It should be noted that myths have a unique purpose that strengthens the concept of cultural identity in a diverse environment where people are expected to demonstrate tolerance during their interactions with other individuals. From this realization, the relationship between myths and culture plays an important role in shaping the perspectives of other individuals who might develop bias and stereotypes due to their limited understanding. Therefore, the connection between culture and myths highlights the overall experiences of individuals in the community and their ability to conquer the world through resilience.

In the U.S., the Cherokee Indian Tribe is among the largest population groups that has a rich historical background detailing their origin and existence. It is widely believed that the Cherokee were religious people who invoked the spirits before going to war to seek their blessings over the enemies (Goodwin, 2019). Given that the Cherokee were hunters, they also invoked the powers of the spirits to reward their efforts in the wild. From this realization, the myths about the Cherokee provide an opportunity for other population groups to express interest about their identity and the role of the spirits in their existence.

Invoking the spirits was a key process in the life of the Cherokees because of their deep connection that enabled them to emerge victorious in their endeavors. While the practice may be easily misunderstood by other population groups, studying the myths allows individuals to develop an understanding about the beliefs and values held by the Cherokees. From this perspective, myths play an important role in uniting population groups and creating an enabling environment where other cultures can create a connection with the Cherokees, guaranteeing a peaceful existence. Hence, myths provide powerful insights that demonstrate how different population groups approach different scenarios in the contemporary society.

In defining a myth, many scholars view the concept as a narrative that describes the cultural beliefs and practices of a population group. Even though many myths have an abstract origin, they expose individuals to an environment where people can familiarize themselves with the different practices taking place in the contemporary society (Littler, 2017). However, there is a huge difference between myths and symbolic behavior such as cult and rituals that may be perceived negatively by individuals who do not conform to the sect. Notably, myths provide a valid perspective to actual events that took place in the medieval world, providing an opportunity for subsequent generations to connect with their ancestors.

The connection between culture and myths highlights the overall experiences of individuals in the community and their ability to conquer the world through resilience. On many occasions, individuals are expected to identify various aspects that influence their perspectives towards life. On many occasions, myths contain fun facts that can be used to inform young people about their cultural identity while defining their origin. For instance, the Cherokees were extremely religious individuals who invoked spirits to help them overcome problems in their surroundings. From this observation, the religious myths about the Cherokees allows other tribes to understand their way of life, a move that enhances tolerance.
