A person’s needs are the basic motivation to work. Each individual has a different need, depending on age, gender, perspectives, etc. A child aged 5 to 12 years has various needs, including shelter, food, clothing, and education. Assessment of a child’s development entails obtaining raw data concerning their growth and development stages, including social, emotional, cognitive, language, physical /motor, and learning approaches (Peyre, et al., 2017). Besides monitoring the child’s growth, the assessment is vital in that it identifies children with special needs with may require extra support (Peyre, et al., 2017). Children grow differently based on their age and the development stage which they represent. Therefore, all the assessment techniques will need to match each child’s needs and requirements, where their presentation will base it. Such an evaluation aids in identifying interventions and the information needed to provide an individualized strategy for treatment.
The typical developmental stages of a five-year-old child
The selected child is five years of age, with different physical and motor skills compared to the younger and older children. Children at this age gain about 4 to 5 pounds and grow about 2 or 3 inches. At this age, they tend to grow their first adult teeth which start breaking the gum. They also have better coordination and can skip, jump and hop with good balance (Peyre, et al., 2017). Children at this age have a vocabulary of around 2000 words, can identify different coins, and easily count to 10. They can ask more profound questions and identify primary colors very quickly. A child of five years as a group of friends can read and play together at times (Peyre, et al., 2017). Child development can be enhanced by reading together and playing creatively with the child at this age. A child can also be encouraged to perform small household chores and pick up toys to help with the development.
Applying developmental theory based on Kohlberg
To developmentally assess a child who is five years old, the Kohlberg developmental theory is most suitable. This is since the theory focuses on how children develop their morality and moral reasoning. It suggests that the development occurs in six stages and is primarily focused on seeking and maintaining justice (Cherry, 2021). The first statement of the moral development assessment will evaluate the child’s obedience since obeying rules is critical in that it is one of the ways of avoiding punishment. Stage two will entail individualism and exchange, where the children account for individual points of view (Cherry, 2021). The third stage entails assessing good interpersonal relationships by the child, followed by the fourth stage of maintaining social order. The fourth stage focuses on ensuring that the child can maintain social order (Cherry, 2021). The fifth stage focuses on the child’s social contract and individual rights, where his/her values, opinions, and beliefs are examined. Finally, the universal principles of a child are examined, where their moral reasoning is examined.
