Reflection on Self, Work with Clients, and Career

Unit 10 Discussion

Reflection on Self, Work with Clients, and Career

Use your exercise manual to read and complete Exercise 8.11, “Help Clients Tap into Their Resilience,” below. Provide a summary of your response to the exercise in this discussion. Use the required readings from The Skilled Helper text this week to support your responses. (See attached reading from Egan, G., & Reese, R. J. (2019). The Skilled Helper: A problem-management and opportunity-development approach to helping (11th ed.). Boston, MA: Cengage).

  • What three take-away ideas about resilience could you apply to your work with clients?

EXERCISE 8.11: HELP CLIENTS TAP INTO THEIR RESILIENCE

Encouraging resilience is part of the helping process. Although we draw upon our resilience, it is not a fixed trait—resilience can also be developed. Think of how you have been “toughened” by life’s experiences and learned to bounce back when something did not turn out as expected—this is learning resilience. Review the section in Chapter 8 of The Skilled Helper that lists different possibilities for helping clients with this process, and then complete the exercise below. These areas can give you some ideas for helping clients identify ways to “tap into” and develop their resiliencies.

  1. Read the imagined scenario below and answer the questions that follow the scenario (questions 1 and 2). The questions are designed to help you think about the scenario from both the client’s and helper’s perspective.

  1. Get with a learning partner and role play (three to five minutes), both taking turns as counselor and client. In the role of client, inject your personality and who you are into the role play, so as to give the role play “flavor” and to make it more genuine and real. In the role of counselor, use the counseling skills you have developed to understand what resiliencies the client has drawn upon in the past.

  1. Afterward, give feedback to each other from the client perspective about what was more and less helpful. Be specific in your feedback.

  1. Lastly, talk with one another about what it was like as the counselor to try and help tap into the client’s resilience. What was easy about it? What was difficult? What did and didn’t feel natural? How were your ways of drawing out one another’s resiliencies similar and different?

Client Scenario

Imagine a client who has applied to medical school for the third time and just received the latest round of rejection letters. The client’s dream has always been to be a doctor and is devastated. She (or he) has a parent who is a physician, and the rest of the family members (both immediate and extended) are all very successful in a variety of professional careers. The client is close to his or her family, but is ashamed at what they will think. The client does not know what to do next and seeks counseling for help. During the first session, the therapist also learns the client is an extremely hard worker, is well-respected and liked by teachers and peers, and is seen as someone who can be counted on. The client is a good student but has struggled on the MCAT (medical school entrance exam), saying that she or he got “psyched out” the two times the exam was taken. The client considered physical therapy as a career but decided it was not “prestigious enough” for not meeting the family standard of success.
